Why I hate the cloud.
What on earth is “The Cloud”?
Me, I’m a geek by definition, I love Star Trek, play computer games, work in IT and speak a little Japanese. So if something new comes along I want to know what is going on. I want in!
So when someone started talking about this “new” thing — the cloud, my first thought was “I missed that” has some brand new technology been developed? What is it – do I need one? Well, what is it – vapourware! That is “pass along please nothing new to see here”. It’s just a network, nothing else.
For years we techies have been trying to stop our users storing stuff locally. You can tell them “your hard disk will die” or you can explain it won’t be backed up. Or even – you can only access it from the one box if it’s not on the net, but they will not listen. Tell ‘em its stored on a cloud and they go all gooey eyed on you and say “I want one”.
Maybe that’s where we techies go wrong, try to explain in plain English what to do and they all ignore you. It looks like – again that where we techies have failed to make an impact Marketing hype has succeeded.

Thank you, I have recently been searching for information about this topic for ages and yours is the greatest I’ve discovered so far. But, what about the conclusion? Are you sure about the source?
I’m glad you enjoyed the article Oklejanie. Colin Gallet is one of Global Knowledge’s Microsoft trainers. I think Colin’s conclusion is that Cloud is a very convenient way to describe a complex topic, rather than a new technology.
What bugs me about the “cloud” terminology is that it’s nothing more than good old traditional “hosted services” which have been around for years and years. I don’t know what it is about “cloud” that bugs me, but I just loath the term “cloud” (even though I love the actual clouds in the sky). Maybe it’s because those clouds are so natural, fluffy and harmless yet our human made clouds are so dark, gloomy and full of human flaws.
